INSIGHTS FROM RECENT TRIPS

Hi friends, Recently, God has given me the opportunity to travel to Ukraine several times and to have a few meetings that were very important and direction-setting for me. These were meetings that revealed something new to me and confirmed God’s faithfulness and love. They opened a new perspective and gave me the opportunity to serve.

During one of these trips, I was able to meet with Serhii, who before the full-scale invasion was a choir conductor in an Orthodox church in the town of Hoshcha. You may have already heard me mention him, or read about him in the book to which I contributed a chapter. By the way, you can already order this book on Amazon using the following link:

Light-Valley-Shadow-Death

Together, we went through our first combat experience in Sievierodonetsk, and it was to him that I first suggested gathering together during a short rest amid the war and shelling to hold our own worship service. I read the Bible and led a conversation about God’s Word as a Protestant, while he sang psalms as an Orthodox believer. We did all of this only about 800–1,000 meters from the line of contact, with the sounds of incoming fire nearby. It was also he who inspired me to create the first field chapel for soldiers.

Light-Valley-Shadow-Death

And here we were, meeting again after three and a half years. He was at home; it was evening, and—as so often happens in Ukraine—the electricity was not working. We met in complete darkness, by the light of flashlights and candles, to once again talk about God and try to encourage one another. It reminded me so much of our first combat experience—how we went through shelling, fear, and the struggle to find God in the midst of it all. It was such a joy for me to pray together with them again and to listen as they sang their prayers.

But the story is this: after three years on the front lines, Serhii could no longer endure the psychological pressure. He laid down his weapon and left his unit without authorization (what is commonly referred to as going AWOL). He is deeply burdened by self-condemnation over this decision and has very few people he can talk to. At the same time, he is currently unable to attend his home church because he fears judgment from the congregation. All of this has created intense psychological and spiritual pressure. On the other hand, he simply does not have the strength to return to the war. I was grateful that we were finally able to meet, talk through all of this, and pray together with him, his wife, his father-in-law, and his mother-in-law.

In reality, there are tens of thousands—if not hundreds of thousands—of people like Serhii today. Worn down, broken individuals who do not know how to move forward or what to do next. This is a heavy topic that few people talk about. Yet most of these people are in need of healing, guidance, and care. They need to see God’s love, His forgiveness, and His healing. I have been thinking about trying to start a regular Zoom group where believing veterans could be invited, as well as believing men who, like Serhii, could not withstand the pressure and left their units without authorization. However, I want to discern whether God is truly calling me to this and whether He will give me enough strength to faithfully lead such groups on a regular basis. Please pray for clarity from God for us in this matter.

During these recent meetings, I also had the opportunity to spend time with other veterans who lost limbs in the war. One of them was another Serhii. This Serhii was the platoon commander of the unit in which the first Serhii—the Orthodox choir conductor I mentioned at the beginning of this letter—served. After serving for less than half a year, he lost both of his legs. I tried to help him in any way I could. And now, after several years, I was finally able to meet him in person.

He is doing well—he has received two prosthetics, walks on them, and has a job. But what I heard from him and from other men who lost limbs surprised me and showed me changes I need to make in how I work with veterans who have lost limbs.

In the past, when I heard someone talk about very difficult trials in their life, I would instinctively—and sometimes intentionally—change my facial expression to show sympathy and sorrow for what they were going through. However, through conversations with men who lost limbs in the war, I realized that this kind of sympathy—especially verbally expressing sorrow over the horrors they endured and the fact that their lives have changed forever—is not what supports them. They do not want to hear words of pity like that. They do not want to be told that they are disabled or that their lives are permanently changed.

What I once thought was an expression of Christian compassion actually works in the opposite way. They do not want to see a sad or pitying expression on my face. Instead, the best thing I can say is something like, “The way you are carrying yourself is a great example.” The focus should not be on their losses and suffering, but on their victories.

For me, this was a major revelation. I realized that I need to change many things in how I have been expressing compassion, and this is something I am actively working on now. If you are able to pray that God would continue to guide me in this, I would be very grateful.

Also, in February I am planning to visit two veterans in Poland. One of them previously had a Christian background and even played in a worship band, but later walked away from God. His name is Sasha. During the war, we were very close. Now he is in poor health and has a disability. Even more difficult is the fact that his young son also has a disability and a serious diagnosis. I want to visit his family, spend time with them, and talk with them. I also want to challenge Sasha to begin attending church again, and I am even considering planning the trip in such a way that I could invite him and go together with him to a local church on Sunday. I do not know how he will respond to this, so I ask you to please pray about this.

And finally, as I mentioned briefly earlier, I am planning to launch a project aimed at creating an opportunity for long-term Christian impact among veterans, as well as building a veteran community. This project is scheduled to begin in mid-March. You can learn more about this project by following the link below:

The-Weekend-in-Europe-Project-12-18

I am deeply grateful to everyone who has chosen to support us in making this project a reality. So far, we have raised 33.5% of the total amount needed. If you feel led to make an additional gift specifically for this project, you may do so through my account at the link provided. But please be sure to let me know that the donation is designated for this project. And as always, these donations are not subject to tax. Here is my email address: Yazvinskiy.family@gmail.com

Please also pray for wisdom from God, that He would show us whom to invite, and that He would already be at work in their hearts. Pray as well that they would have interest and a desire to join this project.

Yazvinskiy.family@gmail.com

With deep gratitude to each of you for your prayers and support, Zhenya and Lena Yazvinskyy
